Mardi Gras Galveston Parade street closure

GALVESTON, Texas – Thousands of people will come to the island this weekend to have fun at Mardi Gras in Galveston.

There will be parades, concerts and other entertainment, which means you need to prepare for a lot of extra traffic, especially on the Gulf Freeway and in and around the island.

Areas in downtown Galveston and along the seawall will be closed Thursday afternoon at 5:00 pm. Plus, it’s a big Super Bowl weekend! We want to remind everyone: drunk driving. There will be a lot of fun Super Bowl parties, so it’s important to take care of them responsibly to keep yourself and everyone else safe on the roads.

The city of Galveston is getting ready for Mardi Gras! February 10-21

  • First weekend – street closures CENTER: No-parking signs will be placed in the city center prior to the weekend, warning the public of impending street closures.

    • Beginning Thursday, February 9 at 5:00 pm, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and 25th Streets between Harborside & Strand and Strand & Mechanic will be closed for events and loading. Crews will block all remaining streets on Friday afternoon. By 2:00 pm, the area from Harborside to Mechanic, 20th and 25th Streets, including 25th Street, Market, and New Strand, will be open to pedestrians only. 25th Street from Market to Harborside will be closed as part of the event area. The streets will open no later than 23:45 on Sunday, February 12.

    • Seawall Parade Routes: Saturday, February 11: Parades are due to begin at noon on Saturday, February 11. The streets leading to the Seawall between 23rd and 61st streets will be barricaded from 10:30 am to 10:00 pm that night. . Vehicles will be directed north of the parades. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be closed on Seawall Boulevard. between 59th and 23rd streets from 10:00 to 23:00; the access streets leading to the Seawall will be barricaded in the area. Also, 25th Street off Seawall Boulevard. The market will be closed from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm to allow for a safe night parade. § Broadway, Avenue O, Avenue P and Harborside will remain open to cross traffic except for parades.

  • Second Weekend – Street Closures CENTER: No Parking signs will be posted in the city center prior to the weekend to warn the public of impending street closures.

    • Starting at 5:00 pm on Thursday, 16, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 February, the streets between Harborside & Strand and Strand & Mechanic will be closed to allow the event to be organized and loaded. Crews will close off all remaining streets on Friday afternoon, and by 2 p.m., the area from Harborside to Mechanic, 20th and 25th Streets, including 25th Street, Market and Strand, will be open to pedestrians only. 25th Street from Market to Harborside will be closed as part of the event area. The streets will open no later than 23:45 on Sunday, February 19.

    • Seawall Parade Routes: Saturday, February 18: Streets along Seawall Boulevard are closed for several parades. will begin at 8:30 am on Saturday, February 18. Please note the following timetable:

      • Eastbound and westbound traffic will be closed on Seawall Boulevard between 25th and 33rd Streets from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm; the access streets leading to the Seawall will be barricaded in the area.

      • Eastbound and westbound traffic will be closed on Seawall Boulevard between 19th and 27th Streets from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm; the access streets leading to the Seawall will be barricaded in the area.

      • Also, 25th Street off Seawall Boulevard. The market will be closed from 15:00 to 22:00 to allow for a safe night parade.

      • Broadway, Avenue O, Avenue P, and Harborside will remain open to cross traffic except for parades.
