Man sets himself on fire at UC Berkeley, police investigate
A man set himself on fire on the UC Berkeley campus on Wednesday afternoon, according to campus police.
The University of California Police Department (UCPD) said they received a call at approximately 4:17 p.m. about a burning man.
It is reported that the self-immolation took place in Sproul Square, in the center of the campus.
The man reportedly suffered severe burns and was taken to a local hospital by the Berkeley Fire Department. A passer-by woman who tried to help him sustained unknown injuries.

According to an eyewitness, the man’s clothes were completely burned, according to The Berkeley Scanner. The burnt man was reportedly screaming and moaning.
Bystanders tried to put out the fire by fanning the man with his jacket, who was eventually helped by police and firefighters.
A UCPD statement to Fox News Digital said mental health professionals were on the scene.

“Berkeley Psychiatric Services was on the scene and a few Good Samaritans tried to help and put out the fire. At least one of these Good Samaritans suffered unknown injuries and was taken to a local hospital,” the UCPD said in a statement.

“This incident is currently under investigation and the identity and status of the subject is currently unknown,” the UCPD added. “We don’t know if this person is connected to the university.”
