Man charged with murder of Daytona Beach couple found incapacitated to stand trial

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida. – Jean Macean, the man accused of stabbing a couple in Daytona Beach during Bike Week last year, has been found incompetent to stand trial.

On Tuesday, a judge ruled that Macean did not have the presence of mind to understand his lawyers’ explanations in the case against him, that he had an unspecified psychosis and that there was a significant possibility that, if left untreated, he could pose a danger to himself or others. .

He will be transferred to a state psychiatric facility for treatment until he is deemed capable enough to stand trial.

Masin is accused of accidentally attacking Brenda and Terry Altman in March 2022 on Wild Olive Avenue in Daytona Beach.

Police said the couple were riding their bikes home from a Bike Week celebration when Meisin attacked them with a knife, stabbing them and slitting their throats.

Macean faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole if convicted of the crime.

During his competency hearing earlier this month, defense experts who examined Macean said he had auditory and visual hallucinations, as well as a traumatic brain injury.

The state’s expert argued that although he was not treated for these mental health symptoms, he was able to work and keep a job.
