According to the victim and police, a man who was about to buy an engagement ring was robbed of thousands of dollars in cash immediately after he left a bank in San Francisco.

The 34-year-old was robbed and wounded in broad daylight Saturday at the Mission just after withdrawing about $7,800 in cash from a bank, he told The Standard. The victim, an Asian American who asked not to be named, said that on Saturday morning he and his mother were shopping for jewelry because he planned to propose to his girlfriend.

According to him, a salesman at SoMa’s Gift and Jewelry Center in San Francisco promised him a discount on a diamond ring if he paid in cash, so the son and mother went to Chase Bank on the corner of Bryant Street and 16th Street.

However, as they exited the bank into the parking lot, an armed man approached them and demanded money.

“[A] A guy jumps out to me and asks about money, ”said the victim. “He brandished a gun in my face and threatened to kill me.”

After handing over the money, the suspect hit him with a gun and split his face open before running away, he said.

“I didn’t realize how hard he hit me until I tasted blood in my mouth,” the man said.

He was later taken to the emergency room for stitches to stop the bleeding and prevent wounds from becoming infected.

San Francisco police said the incident happened shortly before noon, and the victim was shot with a gun and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was described as a male in his 20s. No arrests were made.

The victim’s mother told The Standard that she suspects the robbery was staged.

She said that another man at the bank acted suspiciously while waiting in line. The man did not ask for favors, but instead talked on the phone before leaving the bank immediately after the victim withdrew the money.

“I really felt like a target,” the victim’s mother said. “Just be careful living in San Francisco.”

On Saturday, the victim filed a lawsuit with Chase Bank to see if the company would help recover the stolen money, but later that day he received an email saying “no action will be taken” and the investigation was deemed resolved.

On Tuesday, Chase Bank officials provided a comment saying customer safety is their priority and “we are working with the San Francisco Police Department’s investigation.”
