Man Arrested for Murders of Parents in Barnegat Township

BARNEGAT TOWNSHIP, NJ (OCEAN)– The Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Barnegat Township Police Chief Keith A. Germain have announced that Michael Mulgrew, a 34-year-old resident of Barnegat, has been charged with two counts of Murder, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. These charges are in connection with the stabbing deaths of his parents, Eugene Mulgrew, 71, and Cheryl Mulgrew, 69, both residents of Barnegat.
The incident occurred on November 2, 2023, at approximately 11:00 a.m. Officers from the Barnegat Township Police Department were called to a residence on Lincoln Avenue to assist medical personnel with a mobile outreach at that location. As the Officers approached the residence, they noticed a male walking away. Upon their arrival, the Officers observed red staining, which appeared to be blood, on the front door of the residence. They entered the home and discovered blood in various areas. Furthermore, upon entering the bedroom, they tragically found the lifeless bodies of two victims with apparent stab wounds to their upper torsos. The victims were later identified as Eugene and Cheryl Mulgrew. Additionally, a knife was found in the vicinity of the bedroom.
The male who was initially observed walking away from the crime scene was later located in the area of West Bay Boulevard and Gunning River Road by Barnegat Township Police Officers. This individual was identified as Michael Mulgrew and was taken into custody without incident.
Following an extensive investigation conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, it was determined that Michael Mulgrew was responsible for the brutal murders of his mother and father. Consequently, Mulgrew was charged accordingly and is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail, awaiting a detention hearing.
Prosecutor Billhimer and Chief Germain expressed their gratitude towards the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Barnegat Township Police Department, Barnegat Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit for their collaborative efforts. Their combined dedication and swift actions led to the expeditious apprehension of Michael Mulgrew.
It is important to note that the charges mentioned above are merely accusations, and it is crucial to remember that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
