Man arrested after burglars tried to break into a South Miami home with a rock to steal a Mercedes; at least 4 at large

SOUTH MIAMI, Florida. (WSVN) — Police have arrested a young man days after several people were caught trying to break into a South Miami home with a large rock.

CCTV footage shows two individuals attempting to break into a home through a garage in the Southwest 87th Street and 58th Avenue area early Saturday morning.

Homeowners accidentally left their garage door open, making it easier for criminals to gain access to the property, according to South Miami Police.

The duo use rock and sticks to break down two doors.

At least five people were involved in the robbery, investigators said.

Police said the thieves stole a 2020 Mercedes-Benz S63 and fled the scene.

Detectives said the subjects are part of a group of people who travel from Broward County to Miami-Dade to break into a home and steal cars.

Police said they took 19-year-old Joshua Reid into custody on Thursday.

“The thing is, these guys come to Dade County, do their dirty work here, and we did a little hitting,” said the South Miami Police Sgt. Fernando Bosch: “Because I’m sure his accomplices will keep going down, so hopefully we’ll be there, wait for them and arrest them.”

Investigators said Reid was linked to 14 different cases in Miami-Dade. He is charged with burglary, grand theft and criminal disorderly conduct.

The police continue to search for the rest of the subjects, trying to put an end to this gang of thieves.

If you have any information about this break-in or the whereabouts of other subjects, please call Miami-Dade Crime Squad at 305-471-TIPS. Remember that you can always remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
