Magnitude 5.4 Preliminary Earthquakes in Humboldt County: USGS

According to the agency, a moderate earthquake hit Northern California on New Year’s Day. USGS.

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 10:35 am Sunday near Rio Dell in Humboldt County.

Caltrans reported around 11 a.m. State Route 211 in Fernbridge was closed while crews conducted a safety check on the bridge after the earthquake.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the Sunday shaker.

Rio Dell has also been the epicenter of a recent 6.4 magnitude earthquake. The Dec. 20 earthquake was followed by dozens of aftershocks in the same area, one magnitude 4.6.
