Madonna’s former home in Los Angeles looks very similar to “pre-Madonna” and is up for sale for $21 million.

It is very “Premadonna”.

Madonna’s former Los Angeles home is up for sale for $21 million.

The singer lived in this 10,000-square-foot home from 1993 until he sold it to director and commercial director Joe Pytka in 1996 for $5.3 million.

She lived in the house during her years, building up her provocative image.

Madonna starred in the 1993 erotic thriller Body of Evidence, which contained scenes of sadomasochism and bondage and was poorly received by critics.

While living in the house, she had also already been crowned the “Queen of Pop” for her debut studio album in 1983, followed by all-time bestsellers such as the 1984 song “Like a Virgin” and the 1986 song “True Blue”.

The nine-bedroom, six-bathroom home was designed by John Delaricio back in 1926.

The listing notes that it is considered one of the “most significant Spanish estates ever built in southern California.”

The current owner is Russian-American fashion designer Leon Max, who purchased the property for $7 million in 2010.

“I have known about Castillo del Lago for many years as it is a beautiful landmark with a uniquely convenient location to downtown, West Hollywood and the West Side across the Mulholland Scenic Drive,” Max said in a statement.

“It is decorated in a romantic manner and in keeping with the Spanish colonial style of the building,” added Max. “The mixture of Renaissance and Moorish furniture and art creates a timeless country-house warmth reminiscent of the interiors designed by Renzo Mongiardino.”

Max noted that he was inclined to sell the property because he was going to return to England for his child’s studies.

But before putting it up for sale, he spent years perfecting it.

“The first task of the day was to repaint the house back to weathered white and reopen the passageway to bring back what looks like a minstrel gallery looming over the main courtyard,” he said.

“The house has several hanging gardens and fountains that have been renovated and replanted to create an abundant overhang of climbing plants such as fig ivy, bougainvillea, wisteria and jasmine. There is also a large collection of potted cacti.”

The house was also briefly used for the filming of Beverly Hills Cop in 1984.

Located behind a private gate, the 3-acre ridgetop site boasts panoramic views of Hollywood Lake, the iconic Hollywood sign, and expansive views from downtown to the ocean.

Architectural features include coffered ceilings, custom wrought iron fittings, terracotta floors, antique tiles, artistic murals, large fireplaces, exposed wood-beamed ceilings, Spanish arches and a vintage wood-panelled elevator, the description says.

The foyer leads to a tower with a spiral staircase that connects several levels of the house. This includes a two-story formal living room, French doors that open onto a terrace, a wood-paneled library, and a casual breakfast room next to the old-time chef’s kitchen.

The loggia opens onto a central courtyard surrounded by palm trees, a fountain and an outdoor fireplace.

The master suite features lounge areas, double bathtubs and a signature tower with lounge chairs. The property also has a swimming pool, rose gardens and citrus trees.

Luxurious amenities include a media room, a refrigerated wine room, two staff rooms with a kitchen, a separate gym with a spacious terrace, and a guest suite.

Linda May and Brett Lawyer of Carolwood Estates own the listing.

“The next illustrious owner of Castillo del Lago will appreciate the romantic architecture, privacy and fascinating history of our city,” May said in a statement.

“Buyers who live in Hollywood Hills neighborhoods and enclaves are looking for classic nostalgic homes, especially those with stunning views.”
