Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington dies

WASHINGTON — Gary Rossington, founding member and guitarist of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, died Sunday at the age of 71.

The group confirmed Rossington’s death on their official Facebook page on Sunday evening. The cause of death was not disclosed.

“It is with deepest sympathy and sadness that we must report that today we have lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist Gary Rossington,” the post reads. “Gary is in heaven with his brothers Skynyrd and family and playing beautifully as always. Please pray for Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family and respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

Rossington was the last surviving member of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd. Bassist Larry Junstrom died in 2019.

In 1977, Rossington survived a plane crash that killed three band members and became an infamous character in rock music.

In later periods of his life, the guitarist faced several heart problems such as a quintuple bypass in 2003 and a heart attack in 2015. Most recently, in 2021, the musician underwent emergency heart surgery.

The Jacksonville native was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 along with his bandmates. The group released such popular hits as “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird”.
