A Lufkin man was admitted to the hospital after being struck by an unexpected, stray bullet from celebratory gunfire during New Year’s festivities. This shocking incident took place in the northwest area of town shortly after midnight, catching everyone off guard. The city of Lufkin has reported that the police department is currently conducting an investigation into the overnight shooting that resulted in the man being transported to a Tyler hospital for treatment. The incident occurred in the 2200 block of North Raguet Street, leaving the community shaken.
Eyewitnesses in the neighborhood, such as Lufkin resident Grace Ann Wilson, were startled by the unusual sounds coming from outside their homes. Wilson recalled, “I had gotten up and all of a sudden looked and there were like four police cars. I was there for about an hour and a half, and then at about probably an hour and 15 minutes a fire truck followed by an ambulance are flying into town.” The news of the incident spread through social media, reaching concerned residents like Teresa Garcia, who returned home at 2 a.m. and witnessed the aftermath of the shooting.
Garcia shared her experience, stating, “We did see that there was a lot of commotion going on over there. But we do hear a lot of gunfire here a lot at night and we have a lot of issues like cars racing in the middle of the night.” While Garcia’s family is accustomed to hearing noises during the night, Kasandra Del Toro, another resident in the area, expressed surprise, mentioning that such incidents are not typical in this part of town. Del Toro described the neighborhood as “pretty quiet and just peaceful here,” emphasizing that “there’s nothing really happening.”
Officials have determined that the victim was struck by a stray bullet, presumably from celebratory gunfire at midnight. As of 11:45 a.m. on Monday, the man remains hospitalized in Tyler. The city has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with authorities working diligently to uncover the details surrounding this unfortunate incident.
