Long-term impact of North Texas ice storm damages trees

When trees and large branches break, they become open to rotting. Many trees are still feeling the effects of the February 2021 frost.

PLANO, Texas. The Kunes family has lived in their home in Plano for almost four decades, and all this time they have always been under the protection of a large American elm that towers in the courtyard of their house.

The family told WFAA that the tree is nearly 200 years old and one of the largest trees in the area. On Thursday, much of the elm fell after this week’s ice storm.

Kathleen Kunes and her husband heard the tree fall at 7am this morning.

“It happened very gracefully, very quietly,” said Kathleen Kunes. “That was the last storm he could bear.”

There will be more stories like this when North Texas thaws and heavy branches and trees fall.

“Ice and trees do not mix well. The more leaves on the trees, the poorer the mixture,” said experienced gardener Neil Sperry. He said that when trees and large branches break, they become open to rotting.

He said many trees are still reeling from the effects of the February 2021 frost.

“He landed in the perfect spot,” Jeff Smout said.

The Kunes family wisely hired an arborist to run cables to the tree to reduce stress and avoid a fall. A large elm tree fell in the yard without hitting either their house or the house of their neighbors.

The only pain here is inside.

“It has served as the backdrop for all of our weddings, first communions, proms,” said Kathleen Kunes.

They have a certified arborist who is highly recommended by Neil Sperry. He said to avoid anyone knocking on your door with a chainsaw.

“They can do more damage than a storm,” he said.

The children were told the news. The Kunes family does not yet know if the tree can be saved and is waiting for word from the arborist.
