Long Island man jailed for stabbing a transfer student in the heart over a girlfriend and killing him

A 21-year-old Long Island man is facing life in prison for stabbing a 16-year-old high school student — at the time his classmate — in the heart at a mall a few years ago, killing him. prosecutors say.

Tyler Flach of Lido Beach was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years to life for the September 2019 stabbing death of Hasin Morris, who at the time of the murder was a 16-year-old student recently transferred to Oceanside High School.

The jury found Flach guilty on charges of murder, gang assault, assault and illegal possession of a weapon on the first day of November last year after a roughly two-week trial. They deliberated for about a week before reaching a verdict.

According to court records, Morris attended Oceanside High School for only 10 days before he was killed on the afternoon of September 16, 2019. Prosecutors say Flach and several others got out of Flach’s car on Brower Avenue in Oceanside just before 4 p.m. on the same day and attacked Morris along with several of his friends. It was an apparent after-school fight over a girl who broke out outside a pizzeria in a shopping district that day, officials said.

At one point, Flach stabbed Morris in the heart. The teenager’s heart stopped beating. Trauma doctors were able to revive Morris as soon as he got to the hospital, but he died that September night. It’s been about eight hours since the stabbing.

Flach surrendered to the police two days later. Most of the charges against him were related to Morris’s death. He was also convicted of assault for breaking another teenager’s arm.

“Hasin Morris was smart, friendly and had a smile that could light up a room,” Nassau County District Attorney Ann Donnelly said Tuesday. “The young man was only 16 years old and had recently moved to a new high school where he made friends. intention to attack Morris.”

“Tyler Flach stabbed Morris in the chest and took the life of a young man,” Donnelly continued. “This was an incredibly senseless murder, and I thank our prosecutors, the Nassau County Police Department detectives, and the jurors involved in this trial for their careful analysis of the evidence. We continue to support Hasin’s family, friends and community as they mourn his tragic loss.”

The co-defendant, Haakim Mechan, was sentenced last week to three years in prison with three years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to attempted gang assault in the second degree.
