This is part of a gun safety campaign that was created to help reduce gun violence in the county.

At least 1,000 gun safes have been purchased and will be distributed at various monthly meetings hosted by the Houston Police Department, according to the district attorney’s office. These gun safes will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Weapon locks and security information are also distributed at these meetings.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that firearms were the leading cause of death for children under the age of 18 in 2022. gun violence.

“Junior and younger kids who have access to guns bring them to school and just yesterday the DA charged someone with leaving their gun unprotected in a public place, in a park where a 3-year-old kid got it and shot himself in the hand. , Ogg said.

Guns are being stolen from cars at an alarming rate in Harris County, according to Ogg.

“Let’s not make life easy for criminals,” Ogg said. “Let’s store the guns in a safe place in Harris County. Lock up your weapons, everyone.”

In addition to improving gun safety in Harris County, the city of Houston is hosting another gun buyback event this Saturday.

The event will take place in the Alexandre Deussen Park, located at 12303 Sonnier, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Non-working firearms will earn you a $50 gift card, rifles and shotguns will earn you a $100 gift card, handguns cost a $150 gift card, and turning in a semi-automatic rifle will earn you $200.
