Local organizations plan march against takeover at Wheatley High School

HOUSTON — On Saturday afternoon, Whitley High School will march against the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) planned takeover of the state of Houston by the ISD.

The march will be led by the Houston NAACP, LULAC, and several community organizations.

This came after the Texas Supreme Court cleared the way for TEA to take over the state’s largest county.

TEA Commissioner Mike Morath first moved to the District School Board in 2019 in response to accusations of misconduct by the trustees and years of poor performance at Whitley High School.

Houston ISD sued and in 2020, the Travis County District Judge stopped Morath’s plan, temporary injunction. The injunction was upheld by the appellate court, but TEA took the case to the state’s highest court, where Agency lawyers argued Last year, a 2021 law that took effect after the case first went to trial allows for a takeover by the state.

The march will start at 15:00. KPRC 2 will provide live streaming in the video player above.
