Lisa Loring, who played Wednesday in the original Addams Family, has died at the age of 64.

Loring’s iconic portrayal of Wednesday has inspired other versions of the character, including the most recent one from Netflix.

Lisa Loring, best known for playing Wednesday Addams on The Addams Family from 1964 to 1966, has died. She was 64 years old.

Loring died Saturday of a stroke, daughter Vanessa Fumberberg told Variety, adding that she “went away peacefully with both daughters holding her hands.” Loring’s agent also confirmed her death in a statement to CBS News:

“Lisa was a very loving mother, grandmother and friend with a lifetime of amazing stories,” said agent Chris Carbo of C and V Promotions. “She brought to life one of the most iconic characters in Hollywood history that is still celebrated to this day. Lisa enjoyed sharing her memories and meeting all her fans around the world. We will miss her greatly.”

Loring’s iconic depiction of a pale, pigtailed Addams, based on Charles Addams’ New Yorker cartoons, began when she was six years old. Aspects of her performance returned in future iterations of the character, such as 1991’s The Addams Family, its sequel The Addams Family Values, and the ongoing Netflix horror comedy series Wednesday.

Jenna Ortega, who plays Wednesday on the Netflix series, said her character’s viral dance moves were inspired by Loring’s performance.

“I honored the memory of Lisa Loring, the original Wednesday Addams. I shuffled it around a bit, and so did she,” Ortega said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in December.

According to Variety, Loring’s career began at the age of 3, when she began modeling and landed a role on an episode of Dr. Kildare soon after. After The Addams Family, she joined The Pruitts of Southampton and appeared on shows such as The Girl from UNCLE and also played Cricket Montgomery on As the World Turns from 1980 to 1983.

Tributes to Loring flooded social media as fans shared clips and photos of her most famous moments on Wednesday. Munster actor Butch Patrick also remembered Loring, writing on Facebook: “We were very close and often worked together. I know that she was very weak. I was in her company just a few weeks ago. Good luck my friend”.
