Legislation will regulate scooters on California college campuses

A bill was introduced in the state Senate Thursday that would allow government agencies, including universities, to set rules and regulations for the use of scooters and other personal vehicles.

Senate Bill 295 was drafted by State Senator Bill Dodd, D-Napa, and will expand the rule-making powers these agencies already have, including the ability to manage vehicle use and storage, and authorize the use of certain small vehicles. campuses, according to Dodd’s press release.

Dodd said the bill was motivated by a fatal bike crash at UC Davis and a general increase in crashes on college campuses.

“Emerging electrical devices move at high speeds and operate silently, with little to no warning to pedestrians and motorists. My bill expands the power of public colleges to establish common sense rules and regulations that will keep our communities safe,” Dodd said in a statement.

The legislation is sponsored by the University of California.

In addition to the power to regulate personal transportation, the bill could also allow agencies to allow small, fuel-efficient work vehicles on campuses.
