Lee County School District Receives Important Information About the Future of Hector A. Cafferata Elementary School

FORT MYERS, Florida. The future of Lee County elementary schools is on the agenda today.

Namely, Hector A. Cafferata is elementary.

The school remained closed after Hurricane Yang and students attended classes in portable classrooms. The school board is now trying to decide between four options, one of which has already been approved by the state.

The school district has been given urgent permission to demolish Cafferata Elementary from the state. The fact that they have such permission does not mean that they have already made a decision. This is expected to happen towards the end of March and several options are still under consideration.

One update due out Wednesday night, the school district has received permission from the state to demolish it. This news comes from Superintendent Christopher Bernier.

“We needed to get permission from the state to do this,” the superintendent said. “The state helped us make the decision that the Hector A. Cafferata Elementary School, where it stood, is no longer viable. It needs to be removed, so I wanted the community to know about it.”

Council members were offered four options.

  • Option 1: Rebuild the school, which will cost approximately $20 million.
  • Option 2: Demolish and then rebuild the school. It will cost approximately $60 million.
  • Option 3: close the current site and build a new k-8 school nearby. It is estimated that this will cost around $100 million.
  • Option 4: Demolish and retain the property, which would cost approximately $3 million.

There will be a briefing during the next regular school board meeting on March 7th. After that, the town hall is expected.

“Between this briefing on March 7th and March 28th, we are going to have a town hall meeting with the Cafferat community so they can know what the plans are to create a permanent facility for them and remove them from the backyard. Cape Coral Technical College.

The school board is expected to make a final decision on the future of Kafferat Elementary School on March 28.
