Lake Worth Beach Woman Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison for Fatally Shooting Boyfriend

Lake Worth Beach, Florida – In a shocking turn of events, a 31-year-old woman from Lake Worth Beach has accepted a plea deal and agreed to serve 18 years behind bars after pleading guilty to the reduced charge of manslaughter in the shooting death of her boyfriend earlier this year. Jasmine Phillips Bent, who had initially faced a second-degree murder charge, made this decision during a court hearing on Friday. The formal sentencing is scheduled to take place on December 19th at 8:30 a.m., as stated by Circuit Court Judge Caroline Shepherd.

The incident unfolded on May 4th, 2021, when deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check at a residence in Lake Worth Beach. Upon entering the premises, they were immediately greeted by a putrid odor of decomposition. Their search led them to the lifeless body of Jeffrey Pugh Jr., aged 30. It was determined that Pugh had been shot in the neck by his girlfriend at their home on South M Street before she fled to Ohio.

According to the arrest report, law enforcement officials described Bent’s actions as premeditated and calculated, exhibiting a complete disregard for human life. She failed to report the shooting, tampered with evidence, attempted to destroy evidence, and went to great lengths to avoid capture, including changing her appearance and identity. The deputies were later informed that Pugh’s Buick had been abandoned near an apartment complex in Savannah, Georgia.

Coincidentally, on the same day that Pugh’s lifeless body was discovered, Bent was arrested in the Cincinnati suburb of Green Township on unrelated charges. Her apprehension came about after she confessed to the heinous murder to a couple who promptly alerted the police.

During the subsequent interrogation by detectives, Bent claimed that she and Pugh had been together on the night of April 30th when he suddenly became violent. However, the details surrounding this alleged violence have not been disclosed.

The conclusion of this case highlights the tragic consequences of domestic violence and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and communities. As the legal proceedings continue, the friends and family of the victim must grapple with the loss of a loved one, while Bent awaits her formal sentencing in December.

This case serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of reporting acts of violence, seeking help from authorities, and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
