Lago Vista flies over a new city flag designed by residents’ choice

The city of Lago Vista flies under a new flag designed and chosen by the residents.

The new flag, designed by Thomas Panevino and Mason Griffin, was chosen in an online poll last year.

Panevino and Griffin moved to Lago Vista after their marriage and noticed that the city did not have a city flag.

“Mason and I lived in downtown Austin for a while. After we got married in early 2022, we decided we wanted to put down roots in central Texas,” Panevino said in an interview with FOX 7 Austin. “Lago Vista quickly became prominent. The city is surrounded by beautiful nature with rolling hills and an abundance of wildlife.”

The couple decided to draw inspiration from this natural beauty, created several designs and presented them to Mayor Edward Tidwell, who decided to launch a competition for the flag’s official design.

“Our flag design was inspired by the beautiful natural surroundings of Lago Vista. The city on the lake is located among the hills of Texas and the Colorado River – we aimed to capture these facets of the city in the design of our flag,” said Panevino. “Our flag’s design is a rising sun over rolling hills with the Lago Vista city logo in the center.”

Nearly 2,300 residents voted in an online poll, choosing Panevino and the Griffin design with 41.4% of the vote, the city reports. Schuyler Burke’s design came in second with 32.9% of the vote.

“We are extremely grateful to our neighbors and hope that our new flag will serve as a symbol of the unity and strength of our beautiful city,” Panevino said. “As new people continue to move into our city, we hope they feel welcome under this flag.”

In November, the city council unanimously approved Ordinance #22-1961 to adopt the Panevino and Griffin design as the flag of the city of Lago Vista.

The flags were officially raised on Thursday 26 January and are currently flown at four locations:

The city council chambers also display the flag along with the flags of the United States and the state of Texas, the city said. Panevino says additional venues are scheduled to open in the coming weeks.
