Killeen ISD Celebrates Newly Renovated Killeen High School

Students, faculty and the public gathered Friday at the newly renovated Killeen High School to celebrate the revamped and expanded campus.

Former KHS Director and Killeen ISD Board President Corbett Lawler, Superintendent Dr. John Kraft and KHS students spoke at the opening ceremony. Tours of the renovated premises were also organized for the guests.

Changes to the 58-year-old building included significant renovations to the vocational and technical education (CTE) classrooms, auditorium, main gymnasium and library, and the addition of a two-story academic wing with 78 classrooms, 16 science labs, an agricultural laboratory. lab, robotics lab, engineering lab, computer labs, and facilities for new band, choir, drama, visual arts, and athletics.

In addition to new training facilities, KHS also received a new bus loop to improve traffic, additional staff parking, a refurbished courtyard with lawn and outdoor furniture, and a concrete marching band practice area and tower.

With these renovations and additions, Killeen High School has 2,357 students, compared to 2,275 students. The project was funded by a voter-approved 2018 bond and had an estimated cost of about $75 million. According to KHS, the cost of the project was $85.95 million.

The multi-stage renovation, designed by PBK Architects and built by American constructors, began in early 2020 and could safely continue as scheduled throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, KISD said. The new spaces were opened to students in stages, with the final stage opening at the beginning of the spring 2023 semester.

During the 1,170 days of construction, the school remained open and functional for students, according to KHS, as they used a portable kitchen and dining room as well as 46 portable classrooms at various times, according to KHS.

The completion of the school marks the completion of the 2018 Bond, which also funded the campus of Killeen High School Six, Chaparral High School, and four new elementary schools.
