Jimmy Carter’s Grandson Gives Health Update on Former President

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s health has taken a significant turn as he continues to receive hospice care at his Plains home. After battling various health issues, the 98-year-old Carter’s grandson, Josh Carter, shared in an interview with People on Saturday that “it’s clear we’re in the final chapter” of his grandfather’s life.

Following multiple hospital stays for different ailments, the former president entered home hospice care in February. While the specific details of his health challenges remain undisclosed, Josh Carter mentioned that his grandfather is still “fully Jimmy Carter.” He further emphasized the constant presence of family members and caregivers, ensuring that the Carters are never alone. The unwavering support has made Jimmy feel incredibly loved during this difficult time.

Despite Jimmy’s own health concerns, his wife Rosalynn Carter, who was recently diagnosed with dementia, continues to recognize her family members. The couple, who celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary earlier in July, remains committed to each other, as observed by their heartwarming gestures, such as holding hands. Josh expressed admiration for their enduring connection, acknowledging the challenges of witnessing his grandmother lose parts of her memory. However, he emphasized the beauty of their shared experiences, stating, “They’ve experienced everything you can together. I think the beautiful thing is that they are still together.”

Jimmy Carter has encountered several health struggles throughout his life. In 2015, he faced a grave cancer diagnosis, ultimately triumphing over the disease in 2017. More recently, he underwent brain surgery in 2019 to alleviate pressure caused by bleeding, resulting from a series of falls that led to a fractured pelvis, a black eye, and stitches. Impressively, he rapidly recovered from these setbacks and swiftly resumed his involvement in teaching Sunday school and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.

At 98 years old, Jimmy Carter holds the record for being the longest-living former U.S. president, defying expectations and surpassing previous records. Furthermore, his marriage to Rosalynn spans an awe-inspiring 77 years, making them the longest-married presidential couple in American history.

As the Carter family navigates this challenging phase, their unwavering love and support continue to provide comfort, ensuring that Jimmy Carter’s final chapter is filled with warmth and companionship.
