‘It’s just heartbreaking’: Orange County public defender dies in Mexico

Family members and colleagues mourn the 33-year-old Orange County public defender who passed away in Mexico, where he and his wife were celebrating their first anniversary.

According to colleagues, Elliot Blair was a well-known and respected public defender in Orange County. He died over the weekend while on holiday in Mexico, but authorities have provided few details about what led to his death.

Baja California authorities said in a statement that his death was the result of an accidental fall. Blair was found dead Saturday under the third-floor balcony of the Las Rocas Resort and Spa in Rosarito Beach, where he was celebrating his anniversary with wife Kim.

An online fundraiser was set up to benefit Blair’s wife, who said he was “tragically killed”. The fundraiser does not give details of how he died, but says he was “the victim of a brutal crime.”

Mexican authorities said the death was the result of a fall accident.

John Jencks is a private investigator and addiction forensic consultant who has worked with Blair in many lawsuits.

“Today, when I found out about his death, it was like a punch in the gut,” Jenks said. “He knew the law, he was well prepared, his courtroom presentation was outstanding, down to earth, clear, and he knew the business inside and out.”

A lawyer representing the family said he had planned to meet with them on Monday, but added that they needed time to “digest the situation.”

“I have no words to express how bad I feel for his colleagues, for his wife, for his family,” Jenks said.

However Blair dies, Jenks is devastated.

“It’s just heartbreaking,” Jenks said.

He knows this is a huge loss for the family, Orange County, and the clients who need him.

“Just a nice, caring and compassionate person who really made a big difference in the lives of the people he represented,” Jenks said.

Police in Rosarita, Mexico, called the NBCLA back for comment. On Monday, NBCLA also contacted the family directly to see if they learned any new details about the investigation.

They told NBCLA that they have a representative who will speak on their behalf, and they said that he will contact you very soon.
