‘It was beautiful’: Bay Area residents took the day off to see snow

For the first time in 12 years, a winter storm warning has been issued in the Bay Area, bringing snow to the foothills and mountains. And on Thursday, dozens of people took the day off to watch it.

Residents rushed to the top between Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties to see how much snow was left by mid-morning.

But even after seeing a little of it, it was worth it.

“Wanna take a look at this!” Jackie Costa said.

Her 10 and 4 year olds touched snow for the first time in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

They saw the message early on Friday morning, so she bundled up the kids and left.

“We saw a video on Facebook that it was snowing here, so we thought we’d better get in the car and drive on,” Costa said.

Snow began to fall on Wednesday afternoon, and the squall intensified again on Thursday morning.

Enough snow fell before sunrise for Caltrans to call snowplows to go up and down the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Some drivers stopped at the top to build a snowman.

“I knew it was going to snow, but not as much, I started my morning run and thought, ‘I’m going to skip my run to see snow. I really like it,” said Sheshance Yadav from San Jose.

It was only the second time colleagues had seen snow.

They were driving from San Jose to Santa Cruz early Thursday morning when there was more noise.

But as soon as they got to work, they turned around to go back and see the cereal again.

“This morning, I didn’t really expect to see snow because I thought it was gone, but it was snowing, so it was beautiful,” said Farhana from San Jose.

“I was very surprised. I knew from the news that it would happen, but I figured it wouldn’t be that much. And then I saw it and thought, “Oh, this is crazy,” said Nuran from San Jose.

They had no problem getting through the winding highway. 17:00 Thursday and hope the hurricane returns to enjoy this rare treat again.
