‘It can happen to anyone’: 6-year-old child with autism dies after being found in lake

COUNTY PALM BEACH, Florida – A few hours after the search missing 6 year old girl on the autism spectrum in West Palm Beach, deputies made a heartbreaking discovery in the body of water behind her home.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said that around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, police went to the Timberline area looking for Alina Fenelus.

Her mother told WPTV that her daughter is on the autism spectrum and does not speak, and left the house when she went to get her daughter’s pajamas while bathing.

“There was a sense of desperation in the air and you just knew that something happened that shouldn’t have happened,” Saranity Delker said.

Neighbors joined law enforcement in a two-hour search. For Lilian Silva, this incident has become very close, as she has two small children and she lives right on the lake.

“Normally they won’t play by the lake, I don’t let them,” Silva said. “But even more so after that. This lake is deep and I’m afraid they will fall into it.”

Delker’s neighbor said she was using the incident as a lesson for herself and her two-year-old.

“It can happen to anyone,” Delker said. “This is a human error, no one could have prepared for this, but I think it’s easy to take these additional steps; extra locks, whatever the cost, cameras so you know what’s going on.”
