Island retreat of ‘Godfather’ director Francis Ford Coppola lists for $2.2M

An island retreat in Belize that “The Godfather” director, Francis Ford Coppola, has leased for the past six years has hit the market for $2.2 million.

Coppola, 83, has even put up the estate, which consists of two cottages and a “Great House,” for rent under the Coppola family’s tourism venture “The Family Coppola Hideaways” during the time they aren’t staying there.

The owner, California-based attorney Terry Tao, purchased the private island, known as Coral Caye, behind the world-famous Belize Barrier Reef, nearly a decade ago.

Dubbed “Gilligan’s Island,” the island is completely self-sufficient, with solar power and water service through tanks and a rain-catchment system.

A 25-minute boat ride from the village of Placencia, the two cottages and main house can accommodate up to 10 guests with 360-degree panoramic water views.

The island features a small coral sand beach and mangrove ecology, the listing notes. Once used as a commercial fishing camp, it has now been enhanced for travelers who want a “once in a lifetime experience,” the listing says.

“This space is perfect for celebrating togetherness with family and friends. Additionally, there is a full-size day bed for napping or an optional additional overnight stay accommodation,” the listing adds.

The Coral Cottage is newest dwelling to be built there. It has a king bed and a sleeper sofa in the cozy living area, a front porch, hammocks and full bathroom with an indoor and outdoor shower.

Each unit comes complete with solar panels, which are hooked into a battery and inverter system.

“An air conditioning unit could be installed if 14 solar panels and 9 batteries were installed on the new unit,” the listing states.

Peter McLean with The Corcoran Group holds the listing.
