ISD Galena Park sends warning to parents after suspicious man approaches seventh grader, district says

GALENA PARK, Texas – Galena Park Independent School District officials are warning students and parents of a recent “unknown danger” situation.

On Thursday, Superintendent John Moore sent out a letter to inform everyone in the GPISD community after a seventh grade student said he was approached by an unidentified man.

According to Moore, the student got off the school bus near Strick Lane and Dunaway Street and was walking home when a bearded man, who the student described as being fair-skinned and driving a blue GMC truck, yelled, “What size shoes do you wear? ”

Moore said the student reportedly ignored the man and he yelled, “Hey, do you need shoes?” The student said he answered, “What kind of shoes?” According to Moore, the man told the student the type of shoes, and he rejected the offer.

The teenager told the district authorities that the man stopped the truck and walked towards him. The student then ran away, Moore said. As the cars pulled up to the GMC truck, the man got back into the truck and sped off, according to Moore.

“Fortunately, the student returned home and reported the incident to his mother,” Moore said. “His mother immediately contacted the Galena Park Police Department to file a complaint. She also contacted the student’s home campus to alert the administration team of the incident.”

The district asks parents to discuss the situation with their children so they know how to respond if they ever find themselves in similar circumstances.

“We don’t want to alarm them, but we want to remind them to be alert and ready,” Moore said.

GPISD says these are safety reminders that students should be aware of:

  • Try walking with a group of friends.

  • Keep track of what is happening around you.

  • Never approach someone else’s car.

  • Never accept candy or a ride from a stranger.

  • Never tell strangers that you are going home to an empty house.

Immediately report anything out of the ordinary to a trusted adult if the parent is unavailable: police officers, teachers, principal, firefighters, store clerk, or security guard.

Here are a few statements that are commonly used to get kids to go with a stranger:

  • Can you give me direction?

  • I have lost my dog/cat/pet. Can you help me find it?

  • There’s an emergency and your mom/dad wants you to come with me.

  • I have candy. Do you want some?

  • Let’s play a game.
