Investigation Underway into Edison Fire Tragedy

Edison, NJ – The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, led by Yolanda Ciccone, and the Edison Police Department, under the direction of Chief Thomas Bryan, have launched an investigation into a fatal fire that claimed the life of one individual. The incident occurred on September 30, 2023, at approximately 5:51 A.M. at a residence on Poll Place in Edison.

Upon receiving a report of a structure fire, emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene. Tragically, they discovered an unresponsive male, later identified as James Thomas, 71, in an upstairs bedroom. Thomas, a friend of the family residing in the house, was rushed to JFK Hospital but was pronounced deceased.

To determine the cause of death, the Middlesex County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy. At this stage, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, pending further investigation. Notably, no firefighters or police officers sustained any injuries during the incident.

While the investigation is ongoing, initial findings suggest that the fire is not suspicious in nature. Authorities believe the fire was accidentally caused, although the precise details are yet to be determined.
