Interstate 880 in Fremont reopens after closing due to flooding

Interstate 880 in Fremont, closed on Thornton Avenue for several hours Sunday due to flooding, has reopened.

The two southbound lanes reopened just after 4:00 pm. Northbound lanes reopened later Sunday. The entrance from Stevenson Boulevard to 880 northbound remained closed Monday morning due to flooding.

The CHP plant blamed the flooding on “overflow of the drainage channel”. Sliding at the Mowry Avenue railroad crossing, which runs over the freeway, spilled mud and debris onto the roadway, Caltrans said.

The freeway was closed in both directions for most of the day on Sunday as crews sucked up all the excess water and dirt.

Caltrans said its workers remain on standby with equipment in the area on Monday as the region prepares for another heavy rainfall.
