‘Incendiary’ fire damages church in South Austin

The Austin Fire Department says the South Austin church fire has been ruled “incendiary.”

The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. Monday at the Goodwill Baptist Church on Newton Street.

The fire caused about $150,000 worth of damage to the building’s structure and $50,000 to its contents, according to AFD.

Investigators say the cause was “fire,” but declined to elaborate, saying the investigation is still at an early stage.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
