Iconic Tijuana-based Tortas washing car to launch pop-up in San Diego

Tortas Washmobile, one of Tijuana’s historic places selling Mexican cake sandwiches, will soon launch a weekly pop-up installation in San Diego at a local brewery.

Founded by Manuel Hernandez in 1964 as a shack located next to a car wash in Tijuana, Tortas Washmobile has become a destination in Baja Norte thanks to its simple, almost one-item menu – the carne asada cake sandwich. Long after the car wash it once had gone down in history, Tortas Washmobile retains a loyal following in several of its branches scattered across Tijuana.

Tortas Washmobile will begin showing up weekly at the original Novo Brazil Brewery on Lane Avenue in Chula Vista this week. Operated by chef Pedro Fuentes, nephew of the founder of Tortas Washmobile, the plant is expected to produce the signature carne asada torta, made from a 12-hour marinated brisket that is grilled, cut into small pieces, and then loaded into Mexico City style. pambaso roll with panella cheese, tomatoes, marinated red onion, guacamole and tomatoes.

Tortas Washmobile will operate its pop-up window starting Thursday, February 16 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and will then operate weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Novo Brazil Brewing, located at 901 Lane Avenue, Suite 100, in Chula Vista, San Diego Southern County. .
