IAH Suspends Some Construction Works to Reduce Spring Break Traffic

HOUSTON – All four lanes are temporarily open at Bush Intercontinental Airport in hopes of offloading traffic during spring break.

Augusto Bernal, director of communications for Houston airports, said they expect 1.7 million people to pass through the intercontinental airport during spring break.

“When we have a large influx of passengers or people traveling, like spring break, we know what the dates are and we can adjust to this increased passenger traffic,” said Bernal. “Stopping construction work during the day helps reduce traffic congestion.”

He also said that they would do the same in the days leading up to and during the Final Four.

Bernal said they plan to open the new lobby by the end of this year.

“We are in the process of building a new international terminal that will be one of the newest and most modern terminals in the US. once completed in late 2024,” said Melissa Correa of the Houston Airport System.

It’s part of $1. $36 billion terminal redevelopment program, the largest capital improvement in Houston Airport’s history.

“This project started because there was a need to increase the capacity of the airport. We were basically at the breaking point,” Bernal said.

The project includes a complete renovation of Terminal D with a 17-lane checkpoint.

“That’s one of the problems with this project,” Bernal said. “We are building a brand new international terminal as we have an airport, flights come and go. We and we still have to build it from scratch.”

This was reported by KPRC 2 correspondent Sabira Rayford. Last year, there were incidents where people waited for hours in their cars trying to get to Terminal E.

“It was a complete stalemate,” Kate Goode said during an interview in May 2022. “I fly often. I go to the airport every week or two and it was bad. It was very bad.”

“Because we need to build a new international data center, this brand new facility between the existing terminals, we need a lot of coordination, logistics, which we basically need to prepare in order to be able to adjust to the construction and the movement of passengers. Bernal said.

If you’re traveling, he said, be mindful of peak hours and, as always, arrive early.

“It will be your Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 5 to 8 pm, these are the busiest hours for the airport when we have more people in the terminal,” he said.
