Hungry Hill Foundation helps East Austin homeless community with resources and programs

Streets in East Austin look very different than they did in the 1960s, including an old gas station in Springdale and 12th Street.

This gas station is now the home of the Hungry Hill Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps the homeless in East Austin.

“We have a shared kitchen, we have a shared bathroom, and we also have a workforce with capabilities,” says CEO Chase Wright.

Wright was already incarcerated and was homeless. After he got out of prison, he saw the lack of resources given to the homeless.

He says that with this experience, he can communicate with the homeless and give them the resources they need.

“A lot of them helped me raise me while I was out and about doing what I was doing. I spent some time in prison. I was in prison. After the conclusion, I noticed that you know what? give back to my community,” says Wright.

Which he did by founding the Hungry Hill Foundation in 2022. Homeless people can get hot meals, clothes, personal toiletries, and even take a shower.

“I believe that if you can offer individuals the opportunity to go to work, they can get out of the homeless,” says Wright.

Wright noticed that the homeless were struggling to reintegrate into society. Through the program, individuals can earn money by washing cars at gas stations.

“Many people have barriers when they have vouchers or receive government assistance for housing, but they don’t have a job to support the finances they need to maintain a home and be self-supporting,” Wright says.

Hungry Hill offers programs for the homeless to teach them about workforce development and enable them to move into temporary housing.

“What would we do, we give them $10 an hour, they graduate, earn $15 an hour, learn to work in shifts. at this level, you have adult citizens, neighbors who are self-sufficient and don’t need too much help,” says Wright.

The non-profit organization is heavily dependent on donations, there are few men’s clothes in the public restroom right now, if you want to leave the clothes you can drop them off at 1189 Springdale Road in Austin.
