Health insurer Humana has hired industry veteran Dr. Sanjay Shetty to lead its health care business CenterWell, the largest primary care provider for the elderly, home healthcare provider and fourth largest pharmacy benefits manager in the US.

Shetty comes to Humana from Steward Health Care System, where he is currently President. In his new role, he will report to Humana President and CEO Bruce Broussard and will become a member of the Humana management team effective April 1.

The newly created role comes as Humana seeks to empower its healthcare services, saying it wants to strengthen its portfolio of non-payer services and “integrate the clinical experience” for patients into the CenterWell platform. Shetty, according to Humana, will help combine and integrate these services and day-to-day operations.

As president, Steward Shetty leads the day-to-day operations and strategy of the healthcare system, which includes 39 hospitals, a large multidisciplinary medical team, and accountable care organization.

WHAT IMPACT

Humana also announced that George Renaudin, senior vice president and president of Medicare, has been named president of Medicare and Medicaid with immediate effect.

The insurance company has credited Renaudin with leading the growth of the Humana Medicare Advantage program over the past two decades. The company recently raised its 2023 Medicare Advantage enrollment growth forecast for the second time due to higher-than-expected sales during the fall 2022 annual enrollment period.

Renaudin’s expanded role will also include the Humana Medicaid business, which serves more than a million members nationwide in Florida, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Illinois, and South Carolina, with Ohio and Louisiana joining in 2023. In addition to leading Medicaid and Medicare, Renaudin will lead the Humana Customer Service Organization, as well as technology and health plan transformation.

BIG TREND

Last summer, Humana announced that it was simplifying its organizational structure and splitting it into two major divisions: Insurance Services and CenterWell.

The restructuring follows other organizational changes. In April 2022, Humana signed a definitive agreement with private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice to sell a majority stake in KAH Hospice, a subsidiary of Humana Kindred at Home.

In June, the company said it was adding 14 states to its ongoing initiative to rebrand Kindred at Home to CenterWell Home Health. KAH Home Health Services has already begun transitioning to the CenterWell brand in several other states, with Phase 2 bringing the total to 21 states.
