Houston nonprofit hit hard by thieves who caused thousands of dollars in damage

HOUSTON More than a dozen homeless young people in Houston will have to remain on the streets after thieves stole furniture and appliances from several apartments run by a local non-profit organization.

Covenant House Texas Thieves targeted four 16-bedroom apartments, KPRC said.

“We are not sure how long it will take to repair the blocks and make them available to get these young people off the streets. So that’s 16 more young people who are spending more days homeless because, unfortunately, we can no longer house them in these blocks,” said Delesha Jones, Covenant Program Officer.

Covenant House Texas estimates damage to apartments located near Tuam and Canfield at approximately $70 to $100,000.

“This is where you can see that they removed the refrigerator, microwave, stove, dishwasher, and also removed sin. And we have a washer and dryer in this premise. A lot was stolen,” Jones said.

Jones said there was also significant water damage.

“Once they removed the washer and dryer and pulled out some of the plugs, it caused water damage and then they messed up the tubs by filling them with water and causing flooding,” Jones said.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Houston police.
