Homeless 60-Year-Old Receives Stable Housing with Help from UC Berkeley Law Student
In a heartwarming tale of friendship, Anthony Carrasco, a UC Berkeley law student, and Nardo Andrus, a 60-year-old man, have formed an unlikely bond despite their considerable age difference. While their friendship may seem ordinary on the surface, it is their exceptional backstory that truly captivates. Their journey began last year on Ridge Road in Berkeley, where Carrasco noticed signs of someone living in a carport behind his student co-op. Intrigued, he approached the carport armed with a rotisserie chicken and a pot of coffee, seeking to establish a connection. Carrasco’s actions were propelled by his own experience with homelessness during his upbringing in Southern California. Growing up, his family endured a decade of homelessness, which profoundly influenced his path and fueled his determination to advocate for the homeless community.
Motivated by the desire to make a difference, Carrasco embarked on his studies in law, aspiring to shape policies that address the issue of homelessness. His passion for tackling this complex problem did not overshadow his appreciation for individual stories, which led him to introduce himself to Andrus. Contrary to the prevailing belief that some individuals are beyond help, Carrasco firmly believes in the transformative power of compassion and support. Andrus, who had been residing in the carport for a year and a half, expressed his awareness of the dire circumstances but felt powerless to change them.

Acting as Andrus’ personal assistant, Carrasco helped him obtain crucial documents such as an identification card from the Department of Motor Vehicles and even assisted him in acquiring his first-ever email address. With these essential tools in hand, Carrasco guided Andrus through the process of enrolling in classes at Berkeley City College and applying for financial aid. Overcoming these hurdles, Andrus finally found himself with a place in student housing, a significant milestone after months of uncertainty and instability.
The tale of Carrasco and Andrus does not conclude with Andrus finding a roof over his head. Their friendship has blossomed, leading to regular meetings and shared activities such as engaging conversations, chess matches, and dog walks.
