Historic Mayflower Mansion in New York is up for sale for $14.99 million

A historic Upper East Side townhouse known as the Mayflower House is listed for sale for $14.99 million.

Designed by architect John Payne, the stately five-story, five-bedroom, 6,600-square-foot limestone building is located just off Park Avenue.

In the 1920s, the Mayflower Descendants Society in New York State bought property at 120 E. 71st St. It was here that the hereditary organization held quiet noisy events and housed its library.

But by the time of the Great Depression, society was forced to sell. The house was dismantled and remained a divided mess until around 2014, when the previous owners restored the house to single-family status. They added features like new stairs and floors,” said Compass broker Maria Manuche, who shared the listing with colleague Claire Cuquier.

The property was previously divided but reverted to the status of one family.

The home opens into a large living room on the living room floor with 12-foot ceilings, a gas marble fireplace, a large bay window, black and white inlaid marble floors and a spectacular staircase, followed by a living and dining area with herringbone floors and a second marble gas fireplace. Stairs and an elevator lead to the garden level, which features a chef’s kitchen with pantry, a media room, and French doors that open onto a landscaped, irrigated garden for al fresco entertainment and dining.

The master bedroom occupies the third floor and has its own terrace, two walk-in closets and a spa bath. Two large bedrooms with private marble bathrooms are located on the fourth and fifth floors, while the basement is home to a gym and five wine coolers that can store 1,000 cool bottles.

The sellers are veteran finance David Puth and his wife Leslie, who bought the townhouse for $14.1 million in March 2014.

Their children have grown up and the couple is dwindling, but remain in the city and likely in the same area they love, according to brokers.
