Highway 1 Santa Cruz County closure to last until Monday, possibly longer

Caltrans said Sunday night the complete closure of northbound Highway 1 in Santa Cruz will continue through the night and into the daytime on Monday, Jan. 2.

Depending on progress, the closure may last longer than this time.

Officials said a crane was deployed in the northern lanes to remove debris that had accumulated near the Highway 1 bridge as it crosses the San Lorenzo River.

Crews are working to clear trees and other materials to protect the integrity of the bridge and increase the capacity of the canal. They are also working ahead of atmospheric conditions on the river, which are expected to bring rain and strong winds later this week.

Travelers heading onto Highway 1 North head to Ocean Street and will travel along Water Street before returning to Highway 1 via River Street. Signposts and markers have been installed to assist drivers.
