The youth movement was presented at the Chase Center on Friday.

No, Golden State Warriors rookie Patrick Baldwin Jr. wasn’t there. He was in Ohio with the NBA against the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was a group of high schoolers on the floor as local rivals University and Lick-Wilmerding returned to the arena after a two-year hiatus due to COVID.

The Collegiate Red Devils won both games, with the girls winning the first leg 59–26 to single-handedly claim first place in the Bay Counties League (BCL) West Division, while the boys won the final leg 72–55, fending off Clay Thompson. — like the performance of Tigers defenseman Max Meyer, who hit seven 3-pointers in a losing effort.

“It’s an opportunity that few people get,” said University forward Joey Kennedy, who led the team with 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had five assists. You’re just trying to make the most of it.

Kennedy triples in the third quarter, wedged around John Rooker’s layup at the other end, extended the lead to 48-41 after Lick-Wilmerding (11-8, 0-4) came close to one point.

The Tigers, who were trailing in overtime to a 40-point win over the University of San Domenico, were only eight behind at halftime from Jake McDonald’s four-point play and cut the lead to 40–39 midway through third on Meyer’s sixth. 3-pointer.

“They showed they could play anyone,” Lick-Wilmerding head coach Eliot Smith said of his team.

Ultimately, University fell behind Cole Bowk and Will Perkins in the fourth quarter. Boake scored eight of his 10 points in the last quarter, while Perkins scored seven of his 14 points in the stretch. Perkins and -1 with 4:23 to rebound Kennedy and extended pass extended the lead to 59-43.

However, the Tigers had a last hitter, cutting it to 10 twice after Meyer’s last 3-pointer and Peter Drew’s three-pointer, who finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Drew missed the loss to Urban last Friday due to illness.

“He’s a confident guy,” Smith said of Drew. “The guys love him and believe his every word.”

While Meyer and Drew carried the bulk of Leake-Wilmerding’s offensive load, the University deployed a balanced attack. All five starting Red Devils scored at least nine points, Luke Bradley scored eight of ten points in the first half, and Gus Parsons scored all nine points in the first two quarters.

“It’s so unreal to be here”

Both schools clearly appreciated the opportunity to play in such a prestigious venue – the two boys’ teams got together after the game to take pictures – but perhaps no player appreciated it more than varsity girls point guard Izzy Perez.

“It’s so unreal to be on the same court as Clay, Steph and Draymond,” Perez said.

Pérez was one of the stars of the Red Devils team that won a sole first place in the BCL West in an authoritative manner. She had 10 points, three assists and a couple of rebounds in the second quarter alone, a frame that University (14-4, 5-0) won 19-6 to open a 29-14 lead. Seven of her points were scored within a minute, including a 3-pointer that gave her team a 20–14 lead. In a few moments she made the interception and simple.

Gabriella Kelly led the Red Devils with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Tamalpais transfer Olivia Soenens and sophomore Damicia Walls each scored 10 points.

Haley Moy led Lick-Wilmerding (10-8, 2-1) with eight points.
