High school students in New Jersey are waiting to hear about a proposal to reschedule classes by more than 30 minutes.
The vote, scheduled for later Monday, could significantly change the day for Ridgewood High School students by moving the kick-off call to 8:20. School currently starts at 7:45.
This 35-minute change, if approved, will go into effect next school year.
There’s been a lot of talk in recent years about when school starts in Garden State. In 2022, a bill was introduced to require public high schools to start the school day no earlier than 8:30 am.
The start time is now a patchwork quilt around New Jersey. South Brunswick High School, one of the largest in the state by total enrollment, begins classes at 7:40 AM; another of the largest schools, Union City HS, starts at 8:30.
In other districts, they already went by 8 am or later.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has been outspoken on this issue for years. In 2014, the group released a policy statement saying that starting classes before 8:30 a.m. had clear mental and physical consequences.
