‘He could do it again’: Daytona Beach family man hit by motorcycle asks for help finding driver

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida. – John Fornataro’s only son, Cardino Fornataro, was riding a scooter on January 23 when he was hit by an off-road motorcycle.

“It’s very frustrating and scary as a parent because he could do it again,” John Fornataro said outside the Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, where his 25-year-old son has been living ever since.

Fornataro, who moved to Volusia County with his wife from Ohio six years ago, told News 6 that he hopes publicizing their story will help put an off-road motorcycle rider behind bars. The driver was unable to stay at the scene or call for help.

“There are a lot of children in our area. It’s a heavy tourist area – just to be able to leave someone bleeding and take off, there’s something wrong with that person,” he said.

The accident occurred in Orton, Daytona Beach, at the intersection of Grandview and Nautilus Avenues. The Fornataro family is hoping someone will provide information.

“It was in the area behind Bellaire Plaza and south of the elementary school. Anyone in the area, if there is anyone who could just check their cameras on January 23, 6:15 pm, that would be fantastic,” he said.

Fornataro’s son suffered extensive injuries to his right leg and has already undergone eight surgeries.

“His bone was with a complex fracture, you know, split in half, a lot of soft tissue was missing,” Fornataro said. “Fortunately, there was a neighbor, James, who came down and put a tourniquet on his leg, my wife held his leg until the ambulance arrived.”

According to the family, an off-road motorcycle driver was driving through their residential area when he hit their son.

“If the guy on the dirt bike had been speeding, nothing would have happened,” Fornataro said.

From his hospital bed, Cardino Fornataro relayed a message to the rider of the off-road motorcycle who had injured him.

“I hope he will give up that what he was doing is very dangerous, he could have killed someone,” he said.

In an email to News 6, Daytona Beach police said the investigation was ongoing and they were still looking for the dark-colored off-road motorcycle and the male driver who hit Cardino.

“I think it’s amazing that you guys are here trying to help us, you know, and helping the police catch this guy. Get him off the streets before he hurt someone else’s child, it could be much worse,” said John Fornataro.
