Harlandale ISD Holds Meeting Wednesday Night

The district is seeking parent feedback on whether to close the district’s five elementary schools.

SAN ANTONIO. The Harlandal ISD has made a major decision on whether to close five elementary schools in the district.

The county is asking families to have their say at the meeting on Wednesday night.

Superintendent Gerardo Soto sent a statement to the parents that the final decision on the plan had not yet been made.

The Board will vote on this issue later this month.

The superintendent says they have seen a decline in enrollment in the district over the past decade and they predict that this decline will only continue for the next few years.

The district says they could lose more than 3,100 students by 2031.

The low birth rate and lack of residential development are the driving forces behind the declining student population in the area.

Harlandale ISD receives $6,000 for each Texas student.

The decline is so significant that the district lost $12,000,000.

Parents say they need options because they don’t want to send their kids to other schools.

Others fear that without consolidation, the area will disappear altogether.

The district is considering merging schools with their 2022 bonds.

Families can have their say on the plan at the board’s workshop on Wednesday.

The meeting will start at 6:15 pm at the STEM Early College on Apollo Street.
