Grammy 2023 nominations: Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Adele lead

Nearly half of this year’s top nominees are women, and more than half are people of color, according to the Recording Academy.

LOS ANGELES — Beyoncé has moved into the top tier of the Grammys: On Tuesday, the star singer claimed nine nominations for first place, making her — along with husband Jay-Z — the most nominated musical group in awards ceremony history.

Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” was nominated for “Record” and “Song of the Year”, while “Renaissance”, which ventured into the world of dancehall, received recognition for “Album of the Year”. With Jay-Z also receiving five nominations this year, the couple now hold the record for most Grammy nominations with 88 each.

Kendrick Lamar was second in number of nominations, with eight. Adele and Brandi Carlyle each received seven nods. Harry Styles, Mary J. Blige, Future, DJ Khaled, The-Dream and mastering engineer Randy Merrill received six each.

According to the Recording Academy, nearly half of this year’s top nominees announced by the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, John Legend, Machine Gun Kelly and Smokey Robinson are women, and more than half are people of color. The ceremony will take place on February 5 in Los Angeles.

“It makes me feel very proud, but it makes me realize that we have to continue the work we’ve done,” said Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy. He said that progress has been made in the peer-to-peer voting system and membership expansion, but he still believes more progress can be made.

“This year I am pleased with the result and the work that the voters have done,” he continued. “Now we have almost 13,000 voters. This is really important work. I like to think that they spent time listening to the music and appreciating it. I think you can see by the types of nominations that they’re not just going for popular music or music with a lot of plays. It’s just high quality music.”

The Academy added a special song for social change and five new categories, including Songwriter of the Year, which Harvey says will help diversify the 65th annual awards even further.

The non-classical songwriter category will recognize one individual who has been the “most prolific” non-actor/producer songwriter for multiple new entries during the eligible year. It will be a different approach than Song of the Year, which rewards songwriters who have written lyrics or melodies for a single song.

Harvey said that the introduction of the songwriter category is a “significant” step forward for the music industry. Last year, a rule update made it possible for any songwriter, producer, engineer, or featured artist of a work nominated for album of the year to eventually receive a nomination.

“The academy and voters place a lot of importance on songwriting,” Harvey said of the new category, which includes The-Dream, Amy Allen, Nija Charles, Tobias Jesso Jr. and Laura Welz. “Personally, as a songwriter, I’m glad to see that this is an important part of our process. We understand that songwriting is at the core of our industry. It’s one of the building blocks for every artist’s career.”
