Government offices, schools and most banks are closed on Presidents Day

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — Government offices, schools and most banks will be closed Monday for President’s Day.

Federal, state and local government offices will be closed in honor of 45 US presidents. The holiday, celebrated on the third Monday in February, was originally known as George Washington’s Birthday, in honor of the first president, whose birthday falls on February 22.

In 1968, the U.S. Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holidays Act, which established observance by presidents. Some states celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on February 12:
California, Connecticut, Missouri and Illinois. Indian celebrates Lincoln’s birthday the day after Thanksgiving.

Outside of government agencies, including courts and libraries, U.S. mail will not be delivered with the exception of express mail. FedEx and UPS will deliver to your home.

Since it is a public holiday at the Federal Reserve, most banks will be closed. In addition, the holiday is celebrated by the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ and other markets.

Public schools are also closed.

It’s common for most retailers to have sales on sale.

Tri-Rail and PalmTran will operate on regular weekday schedules.

Palm Beach County unincorporated residents receive regular collection services on all holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas. West Palm Beach’s schedule will also remain unchanged.

There are 10 other federal public holidays.
