Gov. Ron DeSantis is proposing a $7 billion plan to speed up 20 road projects in Florida.

OBURNDALE, Florida. On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a plan to accelerate the completion of 20 major road projects in Florida over the next four years.

Projects span from the Panhandle to South Florida, including one in St. Lucie County.

The Governor announced the proposal, called the “Move Florida Forward” initiative, during a press conference held in Polk County.

He said the plan will tackle congestion, improve safety, meet current transportation needs and lay the foundation for future growth.

If passed by the State Legislature, this proposal would invest $4 billion in total revenue, redirect an average of $131 million annually to the State Transportation Works Program, and raise additional funding over the next four years totaling $7 billion.

“This proposal will cut through the bureaucracy that often slows infrastructure projects down and allow the FDOT to target projects that will ease congestion in the state,” DeSantis said. “The acceleration of these projects will allow them to be completed more than ten years ahead of schedule.”

The 20 projects included in the plan include West Midway Road from Glades Cut Off Road to Jenkins Road in St. Lucie County.

This St. Lucie County project will widen an existing two-lane road to a four-lane divided road, add a 7-foot buffer bike path on both sides of the roadway, and add a 12-foot bike/pedestrian path on the south side. project.

The proposals will add a new partial interchange to the Florida Turnpike, providing exits to and from the south.

The road project in St. Lucie County will cost approximately $58 million and will begin in 2027.

The governor’s office said the 20 projects included in the plan will create more resilient transportation infrastructure critical to the integrity of roads and corridors, especially during severe weather events such as hurricanes.
