GOP Moves to Queens Socialist Territory to Challenge AOC and Tiffany Pig

Republican supporters are striking at the heart of the socialist movement in New York, the Queens boroughs represented by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and councilor Tiffany Cabane.

“We’re going into the belly of America’s democratic socialist beast in New York,” said Curtis Sliva, the 2021 GOP mayoral candidate behind the creation of Ronald Reagan’s Republican Club in Astoria.

“We are going to fight AOC and Caban,” Sliwa added, referring to prominent members of the DSA.

Sliva vowed that Republicans would run an anti-Boar candidate this year and an anti-AOC next year to form an alliance with moderate Democrats who believe political scientists are out of touch with issues like crime and taxes.

“It’s Concord and Lexington,” said Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, referring to the first two battles of the American Revolution. “We talk to ordinary people in Astoria. They do not support cuts in funding for the police and prisons.”

A generation ago, Astoria and Long Island City were populated by immigrant homeowners from Greece and Italy and represented on the council by moderate to conservative Democrats Peter Vallone Sr. and Jr.

Since the younger Vallone left office in 2013, the neighborhood’s demographics have shifted, with young, college-educated and left-wing tech-savvy residents moving into the sleek new condominiums that have sprung up throughout the neighborhood.

A political earthquake hit Queens in 2018 when Ocasio-Cortez defeated Rep. Joe Crowley, then Democratic leader in Queens, in the House primary. DSA has arrived.

The following year, a left-wing coalition that included Ocasio-Cortez and state senator Michael Janaris forced Amazon to abandon its plan to build a massive new east coast headquarters in Long Island City.

Other Democratic Socialists, including Kaban and Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, soon took their seats in City Hall and Albany.

One of the leaders of the new GOP club in Astoria, Marie Lynch, called Boar “poison” and Ocasio-Cortez “ignorant.”

“We have to be an alternative to all the madness. Let the police do their job. Don’t deprive the police of funding, she said.

Republicans will see reason to believe after winning city council and assembly seats in northeast Queens and south Brooklyn last year amid voter aversion to crime and bail reform.

But at least one political pundit is skeptical that the Republican Party can penetrate the very heart of progressive Gotham.

“Astoria and Western Queens are the epicenter of DSA and AOC fans. They keep winning races and beating the Centrists,” said political consultant Hank Scheinkopf. “It’s hard to imagine the Republicans winning there.

“These new residents have new ideas – being a Republican is not one of them.”
