‘Good luck, have fun’: 3D printed Terran 1 rocket to be launched from Florida’s Space Coast

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida. — On Saturday afternoon, Relativity Space will once again attempt to launch its mostly 3D printed Terran 1 rocket from the Space Force Station at Cape Canaveral.

The test mission, dubbed “Good Luck, Have Fun,” will be the first ever launch of Terran 1, which is significant in its own right as the largest 3D-printed object attempting orbital flight.

After cleaning up on Wednesday, Relativity Space targeted the launch window, open from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday.

The ultimate goal of the 85% 3D printed two-stage rocket is to contribute to the future of satellite constellation deployment and resupply by “providing the most flexible and affordable launch service on the market” with an advertised price of 12 million dollars for a dedicated module. compared to the more than $60 million often spent on Falcon 9 flights, according to Relativity Space.

Relativity Space uses a new cutting-edge technology to 3D print rockets.

According to the 45th Meteorological Squadron, a 90 percent chance of favorable weather conditions is expected during launch. Launch meteorologists are keeping a close eye on the front moving across Florida, but expect clouds to clear outside the window. In the case of a delay of 24 hours, the probability of favorable weather rises to 95%, since the 16th spaceport is expected to be between the systems.

However, Wednesday’s launch was canceled not because of weather conditions, but because the launch confirmation criteria limits were exceeded in regards to the thermal conditions of the fuel in the rocket’s second stage, Relativity Space said in a statement.

When using liquefied natural gas, methane takes time to reach the desired concentration. That’s why our next attempt will be in a few days. More coming soon!
