Get $1,000 for eating cheese before bed – in the name of science

Want some brie before bed, a Swiss dream, or a Neuchâtel dream? People on one mattress review site want to pay you to eat cheese before bed.

According to reviewers for Sleep Junkie, this is all part of a three-month experiment to see if there is any truth to the notion that eating cheese before bed will give you nightmares.

The company says they hire five “dairy dreamers” who eat various types of cheese before bed and then record their sleep and provide written feedback on sleep quality, energy levels and any nightmares they experience.

Experts disagree that cheese can cause bad dreams. Back in 2005, a study by the now-defunct British Cheese Board found that eating blue cheese caused “vivid” dreams.

The BBC also reports that a 2015 study found that only 17% of people said their dreams were affected by what they ate, but Tore Nilson, professor of psychiatry at the University of Montreal and director of its Dreams and Nightmares Lab, said dairy were the foods most likely to induce disturbing dreams.

Sleep Junkie says that’s what they want to find out. Participants will be paid $1,000 each and will also be reimbursed for the cost of the cheese, but don’t order Pule or Wyke Farms cheddar just yet; Sleep Junkie will send you a list of cheeses to try. They cover a wide range, from blue to hard, soft-ripened and processed, as well as vegan and lactose-free cheese.

The company says you must be at least 21 years old to participate, own a smartwatch or fitness tracker that tracks sleep, have a consistent sleep schedule, and be free of sleep problems and dairy intolerance.

Alas, you’ll have to sleep alone too, so no Camembert for couples.
