Friends gather for Tyr Nichols Memorial in Sacramento

The murder of Tyre Nichols still rages across the country.

Memorials were held in Sacramento and Memphis on Monday, and lawmakers in Washington are reviewing a federal police reform law that was broken in 2021.

The hearts were made from candles at a service at Regency State Park in Sacramento. Skateboarding was one of Nichols’ hobbies.

“He was the one who was always going to comfort you, make sure you were ok before he was ok,” the friend said.

The 29-year-old Sacramento native died earlier this month, three days after being brutally beaten by Memphis police during a traffic stop.

The department confirmed that seven officers were relieved of their posts – five of them fired and charged with his death. And three firemen were also fired that night.

Nichols’ heartbroken mother prays that her loss will lead to real change.

“I feel like my son was sacrificed for the common good,” RowVon Wells said.

Advocates are calling on Congress to pass the George Floyd Police Justice Act, which includes “bans on chokeholds, searches without a warrant, accreditation of police departments,” said Sen. Dick Durbin.

“The time has come to act. It’s about holding people accountable,” said Rep. Stephen Horsford.

One of the leading members of the House of Representatives of the Republican Party argued that police reform should be carried out at the local level.

“I don’t know if there is any law that can stop the evil that we have seen,” said Rep. Jim Jordan.

San Francisco Sheriff Paul Miyamoto on Monday supported the effort being made in Memphis.

“We absolutely support the Memphis Police Department, Chief Davis and her leadership,” he said. “We hope to keep moving towards a common place where we won’t see this kind of behavior again.”

Nichols’ funeral in Memphis on Wednesday will be attended by several White House officials. And his mother and stepfather were invited to Washington, DC, to attend President Biden’s State of the Union address next week.
