French Bulldog was stolen from a couple during an attempted car theft in Richmond

A Richmond couple is shocked and heartbroken after their French bulldog was stolen during a carjacking attempt on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident took place on Barrett Avenue.

“He means everything. He is my child. He is my child, he is my son. I have never felt so full,” said Joanna Lopez.

Lopez told NBC Bay Area she feels lost without her one-year-old Kalua puppy after the incident.

“They followed my car and the dog was just the icing on the cake,” she said.

Lopez added that she and her fiancé sat in a parked car while Kalua waited for an order for a food truck. At that moment, an SUV stopped next to them, and two armed men grabbed the dog and tried to steal its Ford Mustang.

“All they said was ‘get out, get out’ and that’s what we did,” she said. “They were wearing black gloves, black hats with a hood. It seemed like they had done this before. It was so well planned and coordinated.”

Lopez said the Mustang stalled, so the men left it and drove off with Kalua in an SUV. Surveillance cameras recorded how the robbers left.

“His marks are very noticeable. He has a white diamond going down from his face to a white chest, and a black spot in the middle of a pink nose,” Lopez said.

Lopez hopes someone recognizes the distinct Kalua identification marks and calls the police. She said the dog also has a defect in both eyes, known as “cherry eye”.

“Kalua means everything to me. I have never felt that a dog completes me so much that I just want him to come home safe and sound,” she said. “I hope they treat him well. I just really want him to come home. I don’t want him around violence and such bad men.”
