Fremont man suspected of trying to kill neighbor by running over him in the face, charged with hate crime

On Tuesday, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price announced new charges in a one-year-old case.

A Fremont man suspected of trying to kill his neighbor by hitting him six times with his car has been charged with an additional hate crime charge.

Security video from December 2021 shows the horrific attack. Cory Brown, 45, a black man, was hit by his neighbor at the Laguna Commons apartment on Fremont Boulevard six times, police say.

Another neighbor and friend of Brown’s remembers rushing to help during a traumatic incident.

“I went down to the parking lot and the man in the white car started hitting him again and I said, ‘Stop, you’re going to kill him!’ And then he pulled out of the parking lot,” Teresa said.

Now, 15 months later, the suspect, 45-year-old Aquila Khan, has been charged with a hate crime.

“We’re here to fix a big mistake,” Price said.

Khan is serving time and is currently being held in Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail on charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon after running over his neighbor six times.

“Fremont PD has been very adamant that we look into this case and make sure he gets the proper charges,” Price said.

This second look showed that Khan had also sabotaged Brown’s car with racial slurs, racist threats, and had previously attempted physical abuse.

“There was clear evidence of Mr. Kahn’s racial hostility towards Mr. Brown,” Price said.

This is the second time Kang has been charged with assault and a hate crime. In August 2021 in Fremont’s Central Park, Khan is suspected of beating an Indian woman for speaking Hindi, then punching her in the face until she passed out, before throwing his phone into Lake Elizabeth.

According to the district attorney, both the woman and Brown are still recovering, they still have injuries, and Brown considers himself lucky to be alive.

“Thank God, he’s all right, it was very painful for me to look at this,” Teresa said.

Brown refused to speak to NBC Bay Area about the attack. The Alameda County District Attorney’s office said he has a civil case filed against him and his ability to speak is somewhat limited.
